"Sakura and Farewell to Meilin" (さくらのさよなら苺鈴(メイリン), Sakura no Sayonara Meirin?) is the 8th episode of the second season of Cardcaptor Sakura (anime). The Cardcaptors title for this episode is "Meiling's Story".

Summary[]

Meiling’s mother calls and wants her to return to Hong Kong. Meiling is sad about leaving Syaoran, but he acts like he doesn’t care and she leaves the house. Sakura invites her to a sleepover and she accepts. The two of them talk about how she feels about Syaoran, how they met, and even about Sakura and Yukito. That night Sakura senses a Clow Card and she and Meiling head out to find the Card. Syaoran also sensed it and the Twin Card reveals itself. The card has cloned everything in town. Sakura tries to seal it, but both bodies of the card need to be sealed at the same time. Sakura and Syaoran try to use signals to attack at the same time, but it doesn’t work and the Twin Card escapes. Sakura convinces Syaoran to work with Meiling, since their years of martial arts training together has given them the ability to instantly synchronize each other's movements, allowing them to battle the card. The two work flawlessly together and Sakura seals the card. Syaoran reveals that he does believe in Meiling’s power and enjoys her being around. The next week, Sakura, Tomoyo, and Syaoran say goodbye to Meiling.

Trivia[]

Differences between Cardcaptor Sakura and Cardcaptors[]

  • How Syaoran responded to Meilin asking him if he thought she just gets in the way completely contrasts between the two versions. He bluntly outright confirms this in Nelvana's dub, whereas in the original Japanese, he denies this, but Meilin doesn't believe him.
  • Plus, whereas Syaoran tells Meilin that she needs to return to Hong Kong because her mother needs her to, his Nelvana counterpart callously tells her that having her go back home was "no big deal," and that the Clow Cards could be handles "without her."
  • Meilin's reasons for returning differed between versions as well: in the original, it's because she received a phone-call from her mom, telling her to go back, but in the Nelvana dub, it's because her grandmother got sick. In addition, the scene where Meiling receives her phone call was deleted.
  • The scene at the start of the episode where Meilin fails to bake a cake and Syaoran cuts his finger while swords training, only for Meilin to get her phone call telling her to come back home was removed from the Nelvana dub.
  • The scene with Meiling getting so excited about the large amount of cupcakes available to her at Sakura's house was removed from the Nelvana version, as well as the scene with Kero watching videotapes of Tomoyo's recording of Sakura's adventures at Tomoyo's house, though Nelvana still let Sakura briefly mention that.
  • When it was bedtime, Sakura and Meilin have a talk that had different subjects depending on the version. In the original, they talked about Sakura's crush on Yukito, but in Nelvana's dub, they talked about being good at things and Sakura's on clumsiness.
  • Rather than cakes, Sakura in the Nelvana dub said that her dad was making pizza.
  • Flashbacks to the Fight Card and the Cloud Card were added.
