"Sakura and Memories of Her Mother" (さくらとおかあさんの思い出, Sakura to Okā-san no Omoide?) is the 6th episode of the first season of Cardcaptor Sakura (anime). The Cardcaptors title for this episode is "Seeing is Believing".
Summary[]
Sakura suspects a Clow Card has something to do with the haunted woods behind the school. When she returns after dark, she sees her mother's ghost.
Plot[]
During cheerleading club, Naoko tells Chiharu and a horrified Sakura about having seen in the woods behind the school the night before a strange light that turned into a ghost. Chiharu wants to see it for herself and suggests that they invite Rika to check it out. Unable to dissuade them, Sakura begs Tomoyo to accompany them, to which Tomoyo agrees.
After school, the girls visit the woods to see the light that Naoko saw. When they do see it, everyone runs in fear, claiming to have seen something appearing from the light, but everyone saw something different: all the girls saw some sort of monster, except for Tomoyo, who saw a giant meat bun.
Accompanied by Tomoyo and Kero, Sakura returns to the woods that night despite her fear of ghosts, thinking that it could be a Clow Card. After the trio follows it to the cliff, the light takes the form of Sakura's deceased mother, Nadeshiko. Sakura, delighted to see her mother, walks towards it. Kero tries to intervene, but is knocked out by a barrier, and Sakura falls off the cliff. As she falls, a ghostly, delicate hand holds her wrist, slowing her descent, and safely lowers her into the arms of Yukito, who was passing by.
Sakura wakes up at Yukito's house, and after he reassures her that she won't get in trouble with Touya, he and Sakura then talk about how she saw her mother, though Yukito questions if it really could've been Nadeshiko, as no mother would endanger her child like that. That evening, as Touya and Yukito take an exhausted Sakura home, Touya admits to having worsened Sakura's fear of ghosts by describing the ones he saw in graphic detail when they were younger.
Despite Kero's reservations, he, Sakura, and Tomoyo return to the cliff the next night, intent on finding out if the "ghost" was really her mother, but Sakura falls off the cliff again.
As she falls, she remembers her previous conversation with Yukito, and realizes that he was right. She shrieks, "My mother wouldn't do that!" and uses The Fly. The image dispels, and Kero confirms that it's actually the Illusion card, which allows itself to be captured since Sakura saw through it. Kero explains that the Illusion shows what someone is currently thinking about, hence why everyone saw something different, and Tomoyo recalls that she was hungry when she saw the Illusion for the first time, hence why she saw it as a meat bun. A tearful Sakura expresses relief that her mother is at peace.
The next morning, a cheerful Sakura puts a small gift in front of Nadeshiko's picture and wishes her a happy birthday. Touya, who is sitting at the table reading a newspaper, looks up from his paper and is startled by what he sees: an angelic Nadeshiko looming over Sakura with an affectionate smile on her face. Nadeshiko then tells Touya she was worried with Sakura, but she's not anymore.

Notes[]
Difference between the manga and anime[]
- There is a P.E. sequence where Sakura leaps and Touya having a soccer practice.
- Naoko sees the orb instead of seeing the water bubbling in the lake.
- Tomoyo said that she saw a dumpling (or in the Nelvana dub, a giant hamburger) instead of the Penguin King slide.
- The location of The Illusion was on the cliff at the back of Tomoeda Academy, instead of lake.
- Sakura fell when she saw her mother instead of drowning.
Differences between Cardcaptor Sakura and CardCaptors[]
- When Touya/Tori explained to Yukito/Julian about why he blames himself for Sakura's fear of ghosts, in the Japanese version, he got into explicit details on what they looked like such as saying that one of them had an axe in its head, but in the Nelvana dub, he was more vague and said that they were "see-through" people, and that she sometimes saw him talking to someone she couldn't see.
- Sakura's freakout during cheerleading practice after Naoko/Nikki told her story was removed from Nelvana's version.
