Sonomi Daidouji (大道寺 園美, Daidōji Sonomi) is a supporting character in CLAMP's anime and manga series Cardcaptor Sakura. She is Tomoyo Daidouji's mother and the first cousin of Nadeshiko Kinomoto who is the president of Daidouji Toys Co., a large toy corporation and she owns a large estate as a result of her wealth where she has several bodyguards, many of whom are assigned directly to Tomoyo.

Appearance[]

Sonomi Daidouji retain her elegant and poised appearance. She has short, dark brown hair, often styled in a bob cut, which remains chic and sophisticated as she ages. Her sharp facial features, particularly her eyebrows and piercing violet eyes, give her a mature, refined look. Her attire tends to be professional and fashionable, often wearing business suits or formal dresses, which complement her stature as a successful woman. Though a few subtle signs of aging might show, such as faint lines around her eyes or a softer expression, her beauty is timeless.

Personality[]

Sonomi Daidouji is a woman of contrasts—intensely driven yet emotionally complex, powerful yet deeply sentimental. At the core of her character lies her profound, unwavering love for Nadeshiko Kinomoto, a love that defines much of her emotional world. This attachment is not only affectionate but fiercely protective, bordering at times on possessive. Where her daughter Tomoyo embodies soft, selfless devotion, Sonomi’s emotions are more turbulent, woven with threads of jealousy, longing, and loss.

Her bitterness toward Fujitaka Kinomoto is a recurring expression of unresolved grief. To Sonomi, he represents both the man who “took” Nadeshiko away and the one she blames—rationally or not—for her death. This resentment manifests in cold remarks, emotional distance, and a visible disdain whenever he is mentioned or present. Yet, as the story progresses, hints of emotional growth begin to emerge. She starts to acknowledge Fujitaka’s virtues, suggesting a softening heart and a woman grappling with the complexities of forgiveness and acceptance.

Professionally, Sonomi is a formidable figure. As the president of a successful toy company, she embodies executive presence, strategic thinking, and strong leadership. She is respected in her field and maintains a polished, commanding demeanor that speaks to years of determination and success. She knows how to wield influence and power, but this doesn’t render her heartless—her love for Tomoyo and her protectiveness of Nadeshiko’s legacy reveal a tender, loyal core.

Emotionally, Sonomi is not impervious. Her guarded exterior can crack when confronted with the past—especially anything tied to Nadeshiko. These moments reveal a woman still healing, someone who carries grief like a shadow, and who may, deep down, fear letting go of the pain because it connects her to the person she’s lost.

Her journey throughout the series shows a transition from grief-driven bitterness to cautious emotional reconciliation. She remains proud, intelligent, and strong—but not immune to change. In the end, Sonomi Daidouji is a complex character who balances ambition with vulnerability, love with resentment, and strength with sensitivity.

Plot[]

Sonomi adores Sakura Kinomoto much like Tomoyo does, the reason being that Sakura is the daughter of Nadeshiko, whom Sonomi had protected and loved since kindergarten. Sonomi initially blames Nadeshiko's death on Fujitaka Kinomoto, who was Sonomi's and Nadeshiko's teacher in high school, and who married Nadeshiko when she was sixteen.

Nadeshiko's death was due to other factors, however, and Sonomi, after meeting with Fujitaka in adulthood, admits that the early marriage did not contribute to her illness, as both agree that those were the happiest years of Nadeshiko's life. Sonomi tells Fujitaka that she loved Nadeshiko, more than just a cousin. Fujitaka understands that Nadeshiko loved Sonomi, too, and apologizes that he was the one who got to spend time with her between her sixteenth and twenty-seventh birthdays, to which Sonomi quickly responds that that is the reason she dislikes him so much.

Sonomi will always remain a rival to Fujitaka, as she has never won against him in any contest. Despite her recent acceptance of Nadeshiko marrying Fujitaka, she still wants to prove herself the better person. The only time Sonomi has "won" against Fujitaka is during the Nadeshiko Festival in the second movie. When Sakura is almost ready to perform, Fujitaka readies a simple disposable camera for pictures. Sonomi, however, has her bodyguards situated at different angles from the stage, all equipped with the latest video cameras. She claims confidently that she would get the better footage.

Nothing is ever revealed about Sonomi's husband other than his surname. He is not present in either the manga or the anime, and his only mention is an enigmatic statement by Sakura that Tomoyo "never mentions her father."

It is notable that Sonomi adored Nadeshiko very much the same way Tomoyo does Sakura. However, whereas Tomoyo selflessly keeps her feelings for Sakura hidden (and even supports Sakura's love interests, Yukito, then Syaoran), Sonomi was a rather bitter and jealous person when it came to Nadeshiko. Tomoyo tells Sakura that the reason her mother wanted her hair to grow long was so it would resemble Nadeshiko's. Episode 62 and the ending of the second movie, however, appears to hint at a growing affection for Fujitaka that she has hidden in her dislike for the man.

Cardcaptors[]

In Cardcaptors, her name is Samantha Taylor. It is written out that (Sonomi) Samantha and (Nadeshiko) Natasha are cousins and instead they are put as childhood best friends.

Her declaration of love for Nadeshiko is modified to a purely familiar love rather than a romantic love. This rewrite effectively removed the fact that Sakura and Touya are distant relatives of Tomoyo.

Etymology[]

  • Her name Sonomi means "garden" (園) (sono) and "beautiful" (美) (mi).
  • Her surname Daidouji means "big, great" (大) (dai), "road" (道) (dou) and "temple" (寺) (ji).

Trivia[]

  • Sonomi's favorite flower Carnation (撫子, Nadeshiko) is from her cousin's name Nadeshiko.
  • According to Tomoyo Daidouji, Sonomi is fairly athletic as she once going to the national championships in track and field in high school.
