The Shadow is a Clow Card with the power to control and manipulate shadows. It is aligned under The Light.
It is also one of the original nineteen cards from the manga series.
Appearance[]
Shadow is a sombre figure, wearing a mysterious black cloak and hood with no visible appearance or form underneath.
As a Sakura Card in the manga, Shadow receives a star-shaped clasp.
In the Clear Card Arc, under Syaoran's command, its star clasp is replaced with a crescent moon.
Personality[]
Shadow is described as having an eccentric and even volatile personality, one that even Clow is stated to have had trouble controlling
Magic and Abilities[]
Shadow Magic: Shadow can control the shadows of people and objects at its master's command. One of its characteristics is that it can touch others but cannot be touched itself unless done so by one with strong magic.
Shadow Tracing: Shadow is able to hunt down others by finding its way to their shadow.
Fortune Telling: All Clow Cards have the ability to help their user predict the future. Their method of fortune-telling is similar to that of tarot cards. The interpretation of the message the Clow Cards relay depends on the magical power of the user.
History[]
Clow Cards arc[]
When first seen in Episode 2 of the anime, The Shadow causes mayhem at Sakura's school by stealing all the shadows of the students and piling up the school desks. When Sakura tries to capture it, Shadow forms all of the surrounding shadows into one big shadow monster. Tomoyo and Kero help to disperse the extra shadows by using the school's floodlights, weakening the card enough for Sakura to capture it with The Windy.
The Shadow became very loyal to Sakura, and was used to capture The Silent,[1] Thunder,[2] and Mist[3] Cards.
In volume 2 of the manga, Shadow appears in a sweets shop where it tries to tip over shelves on the customers. After seeing that Syaoran Li's thunder wards are able to dissolve the shadows captured by Shadow, Sakura uses The Thunder to the same effect setting some street lamps alight and was able to capture it after pinning it with The Sword. She later had to put the flames out with The Watery. This is the first time that Syaoran and Sakura work together to capture a Clow Card.
Sakura Cards arc[]
In Episode 59 of the anime and Chapter 38 of the manga, The Shadow is transformed when Sakura and Syaoran lose Tomoyo in the school due to the rooms all shifting about. Sakura hears Tomoyo singing and orders The Shadow to track down her shadow.
Clear Cards arc[]
Shadow, like the other Sakura Cards, turned "clear" (blank) and are rendered powerless.
It is later revealed that the Cards were with Syaoran in order to protect Sakura magical powers had grown enormously and that this could be detrimental to her. With the collaboration of the cards, who also wish to protect Sakura, Syaoran is able to rewrite the contract of the cards, replacing Sakura’s name on them with his name and allowing him to utilize their powers, which essentially makes him the new master of the cards.
When the Cards pass under Syaoran's possession, they receive his Moon powers and appeared the Crescent Moon symbol in their forms. The cards moved by their love for Sakura and their desire to protect her. Left with Syaoran through a spell arranged by his mother to prevent Sakura's powers from growing further while creating the Clear Cards; but doing so is extremely exhausting for him and takes longer than desired. However, when the world is rewritten by a taboo magic, the cards return to Sakura's possession as if they had never left.
Syaoran used The Shadow to locate Sakura when she became small and lost. Shadow would then help protect Sakura from the Shade card. When Sakura is carried away by a strong wind, Shadow is unable to locate her since Yuna D. Kaito erased her shadow.
