Chapter 30

The Sword is a Clow Card which acts as a powerful weapon to be wielded by its master. It is aligned under The Firey.

It is also one of the original nineteen cards from the manga series.

Appearance[]

The Sword is made to look like a European Rapier with a winged hilt and guard on it's handle. A gem is mounted in between the hilt-wings with another gem as its pommel.

As a card, it is bound by chains; most likely due to its violent nature.

As a Sakura Card in the manga, the guard is gone, the wings grow larger and invert, and a star appears within its gem. As a card, the blade now points upwards.

Personality[]

The Sword is shown to be very violent. It was first seen possessing Rika Sasaki and even attempting to kill Sakura Kinomoto at first encounter.

Magic and Abilities[]

Slicing Magic: The Sword is incredibly sharp, enough to slice down brick walls and other solid materials such as metal. It can also fight the other cards, it was able to cut through The Shield and even able to pin The Shadow to the ground. The Sword can even cut through the time-space warps created by The Loop. Sword's strength reflects that of its user.

Possession: Sword is shown to be able to possess others when unsealed. It first appeared as a small pin and when worn, will possess its wearer and use them as a vessel to attack.

Sword, in particular, represents a challenge, battle, or test.

Fortune Telling: All Clow Cards have the ability to help their user predict the future. Their method of fortune-telling is similar to that of tarot cards. The interpretation of the message the Clow Cards relay depends on the magical power of the user.

History[]

Clow Cards arc[]

In both the anime (Episode 9) and manga (volume 2), Sword possesses Sakura's friend Rika Sasaki (Rita) and forces her to attack Sakura. In both instances, Sakura is saved by Syaoran and then uses The Illusion to distract Rika in order to separate her from Sword. In the English dub, Illusion shows Rika what she feared most at that moment in time, but in the original series, it shows her an image of her true love.

Curiously, Syaoran's Jian is able to deflect several blows from Sword with relative ease. Presumably, it's magical nature protects it from damage. Sword is still more powerful than the Jian, as seen in the first movie, that Sword was able to cut Madoushi's water prisons while the Jian was not.

Sword becomes Sakura's most used offensive card. She resort to it to penetrating through The Shield and traversing the continuities and warps of space and time created by The Loop. In the manga, Sword was able to stop The Shadow despite its intangible nature. However, in the anime, Sword fails to cut the walls of The Maze.

Sakura Cards arc[]

Sword is transformed into a Sakura Card in Episode 50 of the anime/Volume 7 (Chapter 30) of the manga when Syaoran is bound by strange threads. Sakura uses Sword to release Syaoran from his prison.

In a later episode, Sakura finds the need to fight with both Sword and Fly, but she was limited in that both cards involved the sealing wand and could not be used together. This prompts Sakura to transform Fly, merging with it, so that the wand is left free to turn into Sword.

Appearances in the movie[]

In the second movie, Sakura uses The Sword in the beginning of the movie to destroy a gigantic monster created by The Create card in a battle scene for one of Tomoyo's videos. However, it was soon captured by The Nothing and plays no further part in the movie.

Clear Cards arc []

Sword, like the other Sakura Cards, turned "clear" (blank) and are rendered powerless.

It is later revealed that the Cards were with Syaoran in order to protect Sakura magical powers had grown enormously and that this could be detrimental to her. With the collaboration of the cards, who also wish to protect Sakura, Syaoran is able to rewrite the contract of the cards, replacing Sakura’s name on them with his name and allowing him to utilize their powers, which essentially makes him the new master of the cards.

When the Cards pass under Syaoran's possession, they receive his Moon powers and appeared the Crescent Moon symbol in their forms. The cards moved by their love for Sakura and their desire to protect her. Left with Syaoran through a spell arranged by his mother to prevent Sakura's powers from growing further while creating the Clear Cards; but doing so is extremely exhausting for him and takes longer than desired. However, when the world is rewritten by a taboo magic, the cards return to Sakura's possession as if they had never left.

In Chapter 75, Sakura transformed Sword to new form and destroy a false moon used to hide a prison in time.

Trivia[]

  • The Sword may also be reference to the Divine Swords in the CLAMP manga series, X/1999. The Sword bares a resemblance to one of them, and that at least one was wrapped in chains.
  • The Sword being wrapped in chains may be related to its violent nature.
  • The Sword is one of the only two cards that required transforming the Sealing Wand to perform besides its summoned task.
  • The kanji at the top of the card: 剣, (Pronounced Ken) can mean 'sabre', 'sword' or 'blade' in Japanese.
  • This was one of the more difficult cards, as Rika had to be disarmed before Sakura could seal it.
